Near a small patio in our test garden, we have a large container that looks like it would protect the contents inside from the elements. But when we opened it recently to grab some gardening tools, we discovered that water had seeped in through the bottom, leaving the contents wet and muddy. But whatever you choose, make sure it's waterproof. "You want to be sure that the container is manufactured in such a way that water can't enter. That will typically mean that the bottom and sides are welded or molded together -" says Aaron Johnson, manager of outdoor storage and organization at The Home Depot.
In addition to being waterproof, an outdoor container should also be easy to clean. Food debris, dead bugs, and bird droppings can build up on top of the container - and leaves, dirt, and water can collect inside. "Regular pressure washing will help prolong the life of your container," Johnson notes. An easily accessible drain plug at the bottom makes removing water quick and simple.
Material Considerations When Selecting a Container
You can find small waterproof patio containers made from plastic, aluminum - and galvanized steel. Which is best? That depends on your preferences.
- Look for a rust-resistant plastic, like polypropylene. It won't dent, corrode, or scratch easily, and comes in colors.
- Aluminum containers weigh less than those made of heavy galvanized steel. They also won't rust - but can dent.
- Heavy galvanized steel adds an industrial look to your patio. The thick, heavy gauge steel is durable, corrosion resistant, and tough, but it can scratch.
"Plastic offers a great low-maintenance option - while steel provides an elegant look," Johnson says. "Aluminum falls right in the middle." Whatever material you choose, look for a powder-coated finish, which is more hard-wearing than paint.
Look for Features That Add Convenience
After protecting your patio essentials from water, dust - and debris, the most important thing to consider is access. "Rolling wheels and easy-open latches allow for simple access and mobility," Johnson notes. Look for smooth-rolling wheels that swivel for easy steering. And roll-top containers feature an easily operated latch mechanism for one-handed opening.
